Best
Two-Player
Board Games

Games built for exactly two. Ten of our sixteen picks were designed for two people, not scaled down from four.

Two people playing a board game together at a small table in warm evening light

By Scooter M. - - How we pick

The best two-player board games are 7 Wonders Duel, Jaipur, Sky Team, Patchwork and Hive. All five are published for exactly two players rather than scaled down from a larger game. 7 Wonders Duel is the strongest all-rounder at 30 minutes; Jaipur is the best first purchase.

We earn a commission when you buy through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which games we recommend or what we say about them. How this site is funded.

Nearly every “best two-player games” list is written by a site that mostly covers games for four or five people, and it shows. The lists mix games designed for exactly two with big-box games that technically function at two, and they almost never tell you which is which.

That distinction is the whole point of this site. Every game here carries a label decided by the publisher's own stated player count: Built for two when the publisher says exactly 2, and Plays at two when they list a range. It is not our opinion and it is not negotiable -- Codenames: Duet is listed by its publisher as 2+, so it gets the second label even though most of the internet calls it a two-player game.

We have not played these. What we did instead: pulled every player count, playing time and box dimension from the publisher's own page where we could reach it and the game's reference entry where we could not, and linked the source on every page so you can check any figure in one click. There is more on how we pick.

Sky Team

Built for two2 players · 15 minutes · ages 12+

A fifteen-minute co-op you play in near silence, and the tension is extraordinary.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want to talk freely. The no-talking restriction is the whole game, and some pairs find that frustrating rather than thrilling.

What we refuse to claim

Everyone in this category writes as though they have played forty games this year. We have not played any of these, and we say so on every page rather than burying it.

What we did instead is the part that is actually checkable: we read the publishers' own product pages, recorded the stated player count for every game, and printed the box dimensions only where a publisher publishes them. Every figure on this site links to where it came from. Nothing is estimated.

How we pick

Common questions

+What is the best two-player board game?

7 Wonders Duel. It is published by Repos Production for exactly 2 players at 30 minutes, and its three simultaneous win conditions mean a losing position on points is never actually lost.

+What is the best two-player board game for beginners?

Jaipur. It teaches in about five minutes, is published for exactly 2 players at 30 minutes, and has no direct attacking, so it works in any household.

+What is the difference between Built for two and Plays at two?

Built for two means the publisher states a player count of exactly 2. Plays at two means the publisher lists a range starting at 2, so the game supports more players and scales down.

+Do you show prices for these games?

Only live ones. Prices come from a data layer refreshed from Amazon, and anything older than 48 hours disappears rather than being shown stale. When there is no live price we say Check price on Amazon instead of printing a number.

+Have you played all of these games?

No, and we say so on every page. We read the publishers' own specifications, verify the stated player counts, and cite every figure with a link so you can check it yourself.

+How is this site funded?

Through Amazon Associates commission on qualifying purchases made via links on the site, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which games we recommend.
